Alphabet Flash Cards

Flash Cards are a great tool to teach your child the letters of the alphabet.

Make Your Own Alphabet Flashcards

Start with a stack of blank index cards. Write the letters A through Z on the cards with a thick black marker. Leave enough space on one side of the card to add some images.

Start with capital letters of the alphabet and create a second set later on using lower case letters. Take your time writing the letters and write them as clearly as possible. You could also print them out on your computer in a large font and then glue them to the index cards.

Get your child involved in adding the images or illustrations for each letter. You can cut out pictures from magazine that start with the particular letter. Examples would be an apple for A, a ball for B, a cat for C etc.

Another option is to find black and white clipart online that you and your child can cut out and paste on the index card next to the letter. Let your child color the clipart images.

If you or your child enjoy drawing, you could draw the images directly on the cards.

No matter how you create the cards, get your child involved as much as possible and make it fun. Tell him what a great job he has done with the cards. If you can develop a sense of pride in your child for the cards, he will be more likely to work with you and the flashcards.

Use the flash cards a few times a day, always for short periods of time. Hold up a card and ask what the name of the letter is or what sound it makes. Before you know it, your child will recognize all the letters of the alphabet.
