First Grade Reading Skills

- Your child can read from left to right and top to bottom of a page
- Your child can match spoken words with written words
- Your child can identify letters, words and sentences
- Your child can use phonic rules to "sound out " words
- Your child can use pictures clues and context to help understand a astory
- Your child rereads and makes corrections when what he or she reads does not make sense
- Your child can easily read familiar stories aloud
- Your child can make predictions about what will happen next in a story
- Your child can ask and answer questions about a story he or she just read
- Your child can retell stories
- Your child can identify the main idea in a story
- Your child can organize the information froma story in a chart or diagram.
- Your child can read many different types of text such as stories, poems, plays, newspapers and charts.
- Your child can read for an extended period of time
- Your child can group similar ideas together
- Your child can blend sounds to make words
- Your child can read similar words by exchanging letters / sounds (i.e. change cat to bat)
- Your child can alphabetize a list of words by their first letter
