Kindergarden Reading Skills
Here is a list of reading skills your child should aquire in kindergarden. Knowing more about kindergarden reading skills helps you make sure your child has all the reading skills he or she needs. You can then work specifically on the skills he or she needs some extra help with.
- Your child can hold a book.
- Your child can point out the front and back cover of the book as well as the title.
- Your child knows that written words have meaning.
- Your child can tell you places where written words are found such as books and magazines.
- Your child knows that words are read from left to write.
- Your child know the difference between words and letters.
- Your child can match simple spoken words with written words.
- Your child can retell familiar stories.
- Your child can tell you the meaning of his or her writings and drawings.
- Your child can identify common signs and logos (i.e. stop sign, barbie logo etc.).
- Your child can identify upper and lower case letters.
- Your child knows that words represent spoken words as well as that he or she needs to learn a system (phonics) to read words.
- Your child asks questions and answers questions about a story that you read to them.
- Your child can identify the sound of the first letter, or letter combination of short words.
- Your child begins to identify words that rhyme.
- Your child blends sounds together to make words.
